According to Dictionary.com a podcast is:
a Web-based audio broadcast via an RSS feed, accessed by subscription over the Internet

The term podcast is taken from iPod and broadcast.

RSS stand for really simple syndication and is a way to send information over the internet in the form of audio, tect, and video. You will see and read about applications that are RSS readers. You do not need to download any software as iTunes has the ability to read podcasts.

The best place to look for podcasts is through the iTunes Music Store. This can be accessed through iTunes (Mac/PC).

  • Go to this link to listen to a short video about finding, downloading, and listening to podcasts using iTunes.


Activity 2
  • Browse through podcasts listed in the iTunes Music Store. Listen to at least one of them. Download and complete the Podcast Activity Grid.



How to make a podcast
  1. Decide on a topic and the number of sessions you will create. In this class, you will oly create one session.
  2. Make a rough draft of your script. Use a storyboard to assist you.
  3. Gather up supplies - a microphone, computer, script
  4. Record. Edit as necessary.
  5. Add music or sound effects. Save the recording as an mp3 file.
  6. Import it into iTunes and listen to it.
  7. Create the RSS feed.
  • Mac: Open your recording in Garageband. Go to Share/Go to iWeb. Upload it to the the podcast server.
  • PC: Upload your mp3 file to podcast web hosting site.

Enhancing your podcast - Mac.
  1. Add picures! Take digital pictures and import them into iPhoto. Make an album for these pictures to make it easier to locate.
  2. Othe ways to add graphics: Make a power Point presentation and save the file as .jpg. Import these .jpgs into iPhoto
    • Don't forget to leave blank space all around the borders.
    • Keep text to a minimum - only 2 or 3 lines of text per slide with 2-3 words per line
    • Use the largest sized font possible.
  3. Add video! This can be done one of two ways. You can make one "movie" and share it with Garage band. You could also make '"mini" movie.

Enhancing your podcast - PC

  1. Decide on your topic for a series of podcast or just one episode.
  2. Write a script.
  3. Practice your script.
  4. Record and your script in Audacity.
    • Add background music.
    • Note the length of your audio recording.
    • Export your finished product as an mp3.
  5. Decide what slides/photos/graphics you want to use for the enhanced podcast.
    • Make sure they are in JPG format.
    • Don’t forget a title slide and a bibliography slide(s).
    • Gather your graphics in one folder on your computer.
  6. Open a new project in PhotStory3.
  7. Import your slides/photos.
    • Adjust the order of the slides.
    • Crop your photos and graphics if necessary.
  8. Add an effect or add titles to your slides.
  9. Customize motion for each of your slides
    • Adjust the time for each slide. The default is 5 seconds. If your recording is 3 minutes and you have 20 slides, each slide could be 9 seconds long.
    • Add a slide transition.
    • Save your adjustments for each slide before going to the next slide.
  10. Add you audio recording..
  11. Click Preview to watch your project.
  12. Make adjustments as necessary.
  13. Save your story on your computer. Remember where you saved it!
  14. Open Free iPod Video Converter (found at www.Jodix.com).
  15. Add you PhotoStory file.
  16. Click convert. The application will convert your Photostory file into an mp4 file. You can play this file in iTunes.
